On June 3rd, 2017 we officially kicked off our Paalam mentorship program at our Launch event held at Markham Pan Am Centre. Many new faces appeared showing interest in the program as either a Mentee or potential Mentor. Several Paalam mentees from the year prior also dropped in to vouch for the success of the mentorship program and its impact on their lives.
One of the highlights to the event is that this year had attracted a much more diverse base of interested applicants. We had professionals ranging from a wide range of industries such as biotechnology and law enforcements. This evidences that the Canadian Tamil community has successfully started forging paths into less traditional career paths.
The mentors and mentees had a great time building meaningful connections. The Paalam program has been designed in a way to provide individuals at any stage of their career to build a relationship with a mentor who is compatible with their respective career objectives and pathway to success. Mentees had the exclusive opportunity to gain insight into potential mentors’ successes and experiences. Each attendee had the ability to network with mentors in various professions through mini networking sessions at the beginning and end of the workshop.
As a bonus, the launch event featured a seminar presented by Julie Federman, Customer Success Manager at LinkedIn. Federman is a talented young emerging professional who strives to inspire others to realize their full potential. Through the seminar, she had shared her experience, advice, and tips in mentorship guidance and how it helped her pivot into her current role at LinkedIn even though she had a background in Fine Arts. In addition, Federman provided great tips for perfecting your LinkedIn profile.
Here are 3 key takeaways we learned about leveraging your LinkedIn Profile and online presence for success:
Refresh your profile on a regular basis. In other words, always ensure your profile is up to date as a potential employer can view it and reach out to you with an opportunity.
Maintain an active presence in your network by sharing relevant articles to your industry. This demonstrates that you are up to date with the latest trends and news in your industry.
Read posts by industry related influencers and connections and provide insightful comments. Your profile will be more visible to other professionals within your industry allowing you to connect with more people.
